I am a huge advocate of skip counting in order for students to master multiplication and division. The beauty of skip counting is that it can be taught in the early elementary years. Younger ones tend to memorize quicker than older students.
Skip counting is often called counting by 2s or by 5s or by 10s or by 100s. Skip counting really helps with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It is also used a lot for counting everyday things – counting pairs of shoes, money – the list goes on!
It’s always fun for the children to practice skip counting with music and manipulatives to concretely understand the concept. There are many fun youtube vidoes that can help teach the concept, too.
I recommend starting with 10’s, 5’s and 2’s. These patterns seem to be the easiest for students to master. I would stick to mastering one number before moving on to the next.
I created these FUN Dr. Seuss skip counting worksheets so my students can highlight the numbers with a highlighter. They store these in their math notebooks. They are perfect for review, too.
