I have my 2nd grader learn one word per week and he keeps the printable on the refrigerator. After the week is over, he puts it in his vocabulary notebook.
My 4th grader learns a new word per day from his daily literature. I have him pick out the daily words. Each day, he adds it to his vocabulary notebook.
On Friday we have an oral review of the past words. It’s very informal, but effective.
