Who wrote the first American novel? James Fenimore Cooper holds this honor for writing The Pioneers. He also holds the honor of being considered by many to America’s “national novelist.” The Pioneers, however, was not Cooper’s first novel.
His first novel Precaution and his second novel The Spy were both based on British literary models. But when Cooper created the character of Natty Bumppo for The Pioneers, he broke away from the literary molds of the past and created his own, uniquely American novel. Set in the frontier, The Pioneer and the Leatherstocking Tales that followed portrayed life in upstate New York.
The Last of the Mohicans is the second of the Leatherstocking series and centers on Natty Bumppo’s life during the French and Indian War and his friendship with Chingachgook and Uncas. Today’s copywork comes from this classic adventure. Print, cursive, and manuscript copywork to trace as well as to copy are included in the copywork printable.
