I remember one Christmas I was so determined to get a globe from Santa.

Yes, a globe.

I think I was maybe 8 or 9 years old.

Santa came through that year and I couldn’t have been more thrilled.

I would literally look at the globe for hours in my bedroom. I would also play school with it. I thought I was the coolest and most fortunate kid on the block because I owned a cool globe.

It became such a gem to me that I saved it for my own children and we used it in our homeschool for years. Sadly, the globe eventually took a dive and fell off its axis after entertaining my children and me for many years.

Here are 6 Reasons Why Every Kid Should have a Globe

• Hands-On Model

The globe is a hands-on model that allows students to touch and move the globe around and visualize how the earth spins on its axis.  

• Teaches the Composition of the Earth

There are so many fascinating features of the earth. It may seem like the Earth is made up of one big solid rock, but it’s really made up of a number of parts. The Earth is made up of a number of layers, sort of like an onion. This will allow students to venture into the three layers of the Earth: Mantle, Outer Core, and Inner Core.

• Realistic Model. 

Actually putting your hands on the globe helps you get a better understanding that the Earth is not flat. It also allows students to visualize the different countries as far as location and how big each continent is.

• Teaches Longitude and Latitude.

Latitude and longitude are a system of lines used to describe the location of any place on Earth. Lines of latitude run in an east-west direction across Earth. Lines of longitude run in a north-south direction. Although these are only imaginary lines, they appear on globes as if they actually existed.

• Sparks an Interest of the World.

Just by simply being aware of unfamiliar cities, countries, and continents always ignites a curiosity spark among young learners. Students can pick a place that looks amazing to them and do research of their place of interest. The learning opportunities are endless. 

• Helps to Familiarize with Geography Terminology. 

Just like any subject, one must become familiar with the subject’s terminology. Looking at the globe, researching the area, and learning new geology terminology was always fun to me. Student’s naturally will become familiar with numerous geography terminology.

I absolutely can’t wait to put this beautiful 8 inch Led globe in my classroom. My own children had the opportunity to play and observe the model of the Earth this summer. The colorful interactive Globe with Easy-Read Details portrays deserts, capitals, and continental, International & Regional Boundaries. I was mildly surprised that the words were so easy to read considering the globe is only about 8 inches in diameter. 

I love how bright it looks in a dark room. It has an on/off button and it requires 4 AA batteries. I was so happy that it didn’t need to be plugged in because my students can take the globe to their seats when needed.

It’s a perfect new addition to my classroom this year. I’m going to use encourage early finishers to pick a location of interest on the globe and research it on their Chrome books.  I can’t wait to see what they learn this year about our fascinating Earth.
