Reading Eggs paid me to thoroughly review this product. However, my opinions are 100% my very own.
I get giddy when clients ask me to review any products that involve reading. I am a public school educator and have been teaching reading for the past seven years. Before that, I homeschooled my own children for thirteen years. The greatest blessing was teaching my own children to read. The next best thing is teaching children in a public school setting to read. I adore it.
The science of reading has changed dramatically over the last ten years. In fact, it’s a constant whirlwind. And yet 34% of fourth-graders can’t read proficiently according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. I teach fourth grade and I see it in my own classroom. So when I find an in-depth reading program, I can not help myself but to share.
The Nitty-Gritty of Reading Eggs
The Reading Egg’s program is built on the five pillars of reading success: phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. These five components are essential in building a strong reader. If you are using the Reading Eggs workbook alongside the online program, they suggest completing the online lessons first before working through the corresponding workbook pages. However, if you are a strong teacher with a phonetic background, I think your child could get by with just using the workbook. The workbook covers 60 lessons. The workbook consists of 250 pages with certificates. Each lesson has 4 pages to reinforce learning. There are reviews and quizzes built into the workbook. I’m a strong believer that reading and writing need to work simultaneously. The workbook allows the student to write during the lessons.
What are Reading Eggs Workbooks – Companion to the Online Reading Eggs Program
Every page is designed to help your child become a strong reader and writer. I appreciate that word families are introduced in the workbook. Studying word families allows children to move beyond reading individual sounds. It’s when the lightbulb goes off for students. High-frequency sight words are another perk in this colorful workbook. They suggest using a rainbow word activity by tracing the word in a different colored pencil to help build the muscle memory they need to write those important words. I loved the complete the sentence and draw-a-picture feature of the workbook. There are so many variety activities in the Reading Eggs – 240 Essential Reading Skills for First-Grade.
