Raising Chickens In Your Backyard – TOP 9 Reasons!
TOP 9 Reasons Raising Chickens is a GREAT idea for your Family
Chickens are easy, inexpensive pets when compared to most other family pets. They require about 1 bag of Layer feed that usually lasts about a month for most backyard flocks. The maintenance is at a minimum and children can certainly help with the chore.
Tasty– there is nothing better than fresh farm eggs. Once you’ve tasted fresh eggs, you will cringe at the thought of purchasing grocery store eggs.
Educational – raising chickens from the early chick stage is so exciting for children. Chickens make great 4H projects.
FREE Organic Fertilizer – chicken poop has great levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Just place in your compost pile.
Healthy–
1/3 the Cholesterol of store-bought eggs
2/3 more vitamin A
1/4 less saturated fat
2 times the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids
3 times the amount of Vitamin E
7 times more Beta Carotene
Entertaining – I enjoy watching our chickens hunt grasshoppers while sitting on our porch. The children find them funny, also. It’s quite relaxing.
High Demand – everyone wants to buy fresh farm eggs!
Table Scraps – they love veggie and fruit peelings. No more feeling guilty throwing excess amounts of scraps in the garbage.
Natural Pest Control – they love crickets, grasshoppers, slugs, and garden snails that damage common landscaping.
Great Pets – chickens are very affectionate and mature quicker than most pets. My children name the chickens and actually hold them in their arms. It’s amusing to me.
These are just a few benefits of raising chickens in your backyard. We get about 2 dozens eggs a day. We donate eggs to the local food pantry and share with a few close friends and family.
Our chickens are FREE range except during the evening hours.
Is raising chickens something your family has been pondering?
We have had ex-battery Chickens for almost 2 years now, and yes we also enjoy the benefits of home laid eggs, you cant beat them for cakes! I also agree they make perfect pets too, in fact our cats seem to be afraid of the feathery invaders of our back garden LoL
I grew up on a farm where we had chickens every year. We would butcher some too. We live in town so we can’t have them now but if we ever move out into the country, I’d LOVE to have chickens! Right now we get our eggs from an area family that raises free range chickens. Thanks so much for linking up at Thrifty Thursday–hope to see you again this week!
We had the pleasure to visit a friend who raises chickens in her back yard. What a great thing. If I ever stop moving I will definitely consider this. Right now I buy my eggs from my food co-op. Now I am spoiled and want to keep getting those fresh eggs.

What do you feed your chickens and how much does it cost, we’re really wanting to get some soon for fresh eggs and later on for meat (and wonderful homeschool lessons) I’m just wanting to know how much it’s going to cost before we get into it, we like to have the money saved up before making any purchases so we aren’t surprised when it costs more than we thought

“Great Pets – chickens are very affectionate and mature quicker than most pests.” Was this a slip or did you truly mean pests? Love my girls!
We will be getting chickens in a few months time and I can’t wait!

It would be wonderful, if only the city you live in would allow it! Ours won’t. 🙁

Do you have racoons in your area? How do you keep them safe?
Coons are not a problem around here that we know of, but we have a Livestock Guard Dog protects our animals.
