I remember our first Christmas together as a married couple. We were so excited to get our tree up, but realized we had no sentimental ornaments. We had an ornament dilemma!
Each year on the first day of December, I give each child a wrapped ornament. The ornament is always significant to their accomplishments or stepping stones in the past year. For example, when one of my sons learned how to ride his bike without training wheels, we gave him a bicycle ornament.
I always mark the year on it with the child’s initials. On their wedding day, I plan on giving them all their ornaments in a pretty decorative box.
Stay tuned! Tomorrow I will be sharing another FUN Christmas tradition!

Don’t forget to pin this Christmas tradition!
We do something similar. Each year we let the children pick out a new ornament for our tree plus at Thanksgiving my parents give all of the grandkids a new ornament. So each year they recieve two ornaments they can take for their very own tree someday.

We also do something similar. Every year I MAKE an ornament for each family member, some years everyone’s ornament is the same but in different colors and some years they are completely different. That way my kids will have ornaments to take with them and my husband and I have similar ornaments for keepsakes on our tree so it will not be bare when the kids leave.
Here are some ornaments from previous years –

My mother did something similar, she allowed us to choose one of the brass ornaments from Walmart and then had it engraved with our name and the date. Our tree was always so pretty with brass and red and white lights. I was so excited when I started my own family to be able to continue this tradition with them, until the lead scare of 2008/2009 and we couldn’t find them anymore! I now have a mosh-posh of several different traditions that are halfhearted. It is so disappointing!
Love this idea, thank you for sharing! 🙂
Christmas Eve, I like to read the Christmas story and have the children put the pieces of the nativity in place and the story unfolds.

That’s a fun idea! Each of my kids has a theme (e.i. trains, bears, snowflakes) and I get them an ornament along those lines for their own collection to take with them when they have a home of their own.
