How to work from home with Children
Having worked from home for much of the past 6 years has made me realize it has its perks as well as negatives. Is it possible to work from home with kids?
Yes, but you will have some hiccups along the way.
It’s an adjustment just like any other change.
Here are the 7 tips on How to Work from Home with Kids that have worked successfully for my gang.
Have your own workspace
I know that it’s just not possible for everyone to have their own office, but making your own space will help you keep organized and stay productive. I have used a card table and placed it in my living room so I could keep an eye on my children. The great thing about owning a card table is that it’s portable. I was able to move it to the bedroom when my husband was watching the kids on the weekends or in the evenings.
Work in the early morning hours or late at night
I’m not a night owl, but I definitely can wake up before the kids get up. Just having one hour to work without any interruptions makes a big difference. Also, it allows me to feel productive and start the day off on the right foot. If you prefer to work at night, you’ll be one step ahead of yourself in the morning. Just make sure you set a timer so you can go to bed at a decent time to avoid being overly tired in the morning.
I am the world’s worst about this. I tend to get up early and get right on the computer with my coffee. The next thing I know it’s noon. I always feel better about myself when I am dressed in actual clothes and not in my pajamas. It’s a mental thing for me. If I’m feeling really sparky, I might add a little bit of make-up. So simply just get dressed when you first get up.
Have Activities Planned
Having a few activities planned for the day will help keep the kids busy in between screen time. Here’s an extensive list of kid’s activities for at home that are all screen-free. Use the activities throughout the day to keep the children in suspense. Use bribery at it’s best.
Plan each Day in Advance
It’s very important that I plan out my day the night before. This will help keep things moving smoothly with fewer major surprises. I use this simple day planner that has been my go-to planner for the last couple of years. I like to write my TOP 5 priorities that I want to accomplish each day. This includes both family and business goals. If I don’t tackle all my tasks, I just add it to my list the next day.
Prepare Serving Easy Meals
The night before try making bag lunches for your children. Pretend they are going to school. This will make lunchtime quick and easy. If your in the middle of a work task, all you have to do is give them their bag lunch. If you want to be a super cool mom you can allow them to have an indoor picnic.
For dinner use your slow cooker or instant pot. There are so many simple recipes that use staples that you already have in your kitchen.
Don’t be afraid to take several breaks with your children. Go take a walk, ride bikes or just play in your backyard several times during the day. It will give all of you more energy and the benefits of the sunshine. Even if the break is for ten minutes, it will refresh all of you.
