Yes, I am cheap frugal, but some things I just can’t live without. Keurig K-Cups would be one of those luxuries I pamper myself with each morning. Once you go Keurig, you never go back. Do I hear a ditto or Amen?
So, I discovered I could enjoy my Keurig without breaking the bank. Here is the scoop…. I purchase Extra Bold K-Cups and run it through the Keurig brewer twice on the smaller cup size. Taste perfect to me. The trick is you must have a large coffee cup, so you can fit both cycles in the one cup. It doesn’t taste right if ya don’t.
Extra Bold variety is scarce in the stores, so I always purchase mine through Keurig and get free shipping and a discount since I am a Keurig member. Hey, maybe not their most valued customer, but a nice frugal one who loves their product. NOTE: You must register you Keurig brewer here to receive the member discount and spend $45.00 for free shipping. Register because you get free coffee when you do.
A few of my favorite Extra Bold flavors…
Rainforest Espresso Extra Bold
These are just a few of the many Extra Bold K-Cups that you can chose. I plan on trying several different ones next time I order my K-Cup fix.
What’s your favorite K-Cup flavor?
I’m linking up with WFMW today!
Did you know they are phasing the K-cups out and replacing them with a tea bag type pod – you also need an adapter to use the pods. They will be cheaper and have less waste – better stock up on those bold K-cups now!
No, I had no idea! Thanks for the input! WOW!
My favorite flavors are the ones that come out in the fall, like Pumpkin Spice (from Gloria Jean) but I’m also a huge fan of Swiss Chocolate Almond and Nantucket Blend! We get extra use out of ours because my husband only likes really weak coffee (he’s strange, I know!) so he reuses the one I use!
I didn’t know they were going to phase out the K-Cups either! I wonder how much the adapter will cost?!
Mmmm!! Those flavors sound amazing, Lisa!!
We still don’t have a Keurig, but I’ve been impressed with the quality of pretty much all of the ones I have tried at other people’s houses. 🙂
Great idea! I don’t have a Keurig yet, but my best friend does, and it is divine! I’ll let her know to grab the K-cups while they’re still available and check back with you for a cheap…er, frugal way to use the new bags. 😉
The best prices i find are on amazon.com subscribe and save and tons of clearance at my walmart for 2.00 a box…last time i bought 30 boxes 😀
Thanks for the great tip, Tracey.
So I don’t care for Keurig, I found the quality to be less than a normal cuppa… but I’ve tried it at my parents house.
So here’s what I don’t understand… you’re running the same cup through twice on the small setting. How is it different than running it through once on the large setting? I don’t see the savings here. It may just be that I’m missing something… You’re still getting one cup of coffee from one K-cup. If you put it on the large setting, it would still require one K-cup. I don’t see the doubling of savings. What am I missing?
I agree! I don’t see how you’re saving money if you’re just getting an ounce more coffee in one cup. Is it to avoid brewing two cups in one day? I guess since I brew only one K-cup each day I don’t see the savings.
I’m not sure of how many more oz it is on the larger cup size vs the smaller cup size. I like my coffee a tad strong, so I was using a reg K-Cup on the smaller size once. Now I get double the amount using the bold.
However, my dh likes his coffee weaker, so he used the bold K-Cuo three times. So that is even better savings for us. He uses the larger cup size. So if you are not a strong coffee drinker, than the savings can be better.
Also, my brewer only has 2 settings, not 3.
HTH ~
But even then, if it doesn’t taste right unless you brew it in the same cup at the same time, it’s like you’re brewing one cup on large rather than two on small. Six of one, half dozen of the other.
I have found extra bold Newman’s Own K cups at sams club. 80 for $33 They don’t always have only the box of extra bold, but when they do I stock up. However Sams always have a box of 80 of something, either a variety pack or medium roast etc.
Costco also has the 80 cup box deals.

I completely understand – Her way gets her a 12 or 16 oz cup (depending on the small size on her brewer). If she just uses the large setting its only 10 oz. So, she’s getting more coffee out of one K-Cup. Given that it’s an extra bold K-Cup it has more coffee in it to begin with. For K-Cups extra bold does not mean Darker, it means more coffee in the K-Cup. So she is getting more for her money because most of the extra bold K-Cups cost the same as the regular ones (through Keurig). Hope that clears it up for folks. I love Wake Up Call, Black Tiger and Jet Fuel. Lately though I’ve been using my Filter adapter and buying my absolute favorite coffee Komodo Dragon. I like my coffee very strong so I can’t take advantage of your trick.
Thank you, Melissa for clearing this up for us…
Big Cat Coffees has the best prices on k cups I’ve found. I’m dubious that they’re being phased out. Starbuck’s just announced that they’re going to start selling kcups at Walmart. Citation needed.
yippppeeee! Thanks Jennifer the heads up!
Since I don’t drink strong coffee. I make 1 cup of 10oz and then with the same kcup I make 8 oz and pour them together in a tall mug. But I found out that if I use the ones for cold ice tea it only taste good if I use the 4 oz of water.
They make a reusable “filter” insert so you can use regular old bagged coffee in your Keurig brewer. Wouldn’t that be the best way to save money? That’s how we’ve always done it with our Keurig!
Yes, you definitely will save money with the reusable filter, but I like the convenience of not scooping the coffee into it and dumping it out every time. I know, I am lazy!
